When I watch a movie where the character breaks the fourth wall - most famously mobilised in 1986’s Ferris Beuler's day off - For me, it doesn’t feel like the character is revealing truth, it feels like they are breaking the fourth wall and thus immediately erecting a fifth. Feris Bueler can’t see you, you can only see him. He’s pretending. He’s not a human.
