Spencer Harvie creates paintings that critically explore the intricate facets of online subcultures and fan communities, often portraying their darker, surreal, and nonsensical elements. Employing a blend of found, AI-generated, and imagined imagery, his paintings construct elaborate scenes characterised by cartoon logic within a geeky fantasy world. Acting as visual narratives, his works provide cryptic and humorous insights into the impact of a life spent within digital networks.
Harvie has exhibited nationally across Australia with shows at NAS gallery Sydney, KINGS Artis-Run Melbourne, and Caboolture Regional Gallery. His work was nominated in 2017 for the Konica Minolta Prize. In 2021, he received his Doctorate of Visual Arts from the Queensland College of Art where he now currently teaches.
